David A Slocum
Artistic Director/Lead InstructorA native of Syracuse, NY, I have trained in an array of dance techniques in Central New York. As a young adult I also studied Design at F.I.T. while training in jazz and modern dance at The School at STEPS and The Broadway Dance Center in New York City.
Upon returning to Syracuse, I have conducted classes for many studios in the area including Salt City Moving Co. with Susan Alvarez-Hughes, Ballet and Dance of Upstate New York and Dance Centre North. I have directed after school dance programs at both Tecumseh Elementary and Moses-Dewitt Elementary schools as well as taught workshops and masterclasses for the National Association of Dance & Affiliated Artists, Donna French School of Dance in Norwich, NY and Concord Dance Academy in Concord, NH and Dance Masters of America.
I completed the Dance Educators of America Teacher Training Program Levels 1&2 and continued my studies with classes in Miami and New York. I was one of the founding principal dancers of The CNY Ballet where I danced roles in Graduation Ball, Rodeo, Carnival of the Animals and the critically –acclaimed The Ugly Duckling under the direction of Sarah Rothrock – Rickel. I have performed with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and the Syracuse Opera ‘s production of La Traviatta. I have danced in Syracuse City Ballet’s first production of Swan Lake, Rarely Done Productions Chess, Salt City Center’s Jesus Christ Superstar and numerous self-choreographed works in Central New York area events.
In 2000, I was a recipient of the Individual Artist Grant in choreography from The New York State Council for the Arts and continued to focus on my choreography and teaching. I have received countless awards for high scores, technique and choreography at Regional and National level competitions and have set works on some of our area’s finest dancers. I have mentored and helped many students get accepted in dance programs and universities including NYSSA, The Joffrey Ballet Trainee Program, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Buffalo and Marymount Manhattan College.
I strongly feel that we as dance teachers should inspire and pass on our knowledge and experiences to this new generation of dance students in an honest, nurturing and professional environment. And to encourage them to continue their paths in the Arts and achieve their goals in the multi-faceted world of dance.
